Technical Writing

A lot of writing in business is technical but is not called "technical writing." The Society for Technical Communication (STC) defines it as a broad field including any form of communication that exhibits one or more of the following characteristics: (1) communicating about technical or specialized topics, such as computer applications, medical procedures, or environmental regulations; (2) communicating through technology, such as web pages, help files, or social media sites; or (3) providing instructions about how to do something, regardless of the technical nature.

How to become a technical writer. If you write well and become familiar with style guides that you can find in the library or on the Internet, you can become a technical writer. Initially, you will want to become familiar with Microsoft Word as a writing tool.

You can research other tools and writing information on the Internet but don't get too carried away with tools at the expense of learning methodology for creating technical documentation that does not change. Writing tools are always changing and can be learned as needed.

Methodology for creating technical documentation involves five basic parts. Take a course and/or read articles/books to learn to do what is required in each of the five parts. It is easy to memorize the basic five-part methodology and always keep it in mind when interviewing for a position as a Technical Writer.
